Drugs and The Brain
12th November, 2010Why do drugs have an effect on people?
Why are drugs with different effects actually addictive?
People are often familiar with the effects of different drugs, but don't always know why drugs cause these effects.
This one day course answers these questions, giving you an introduction to how drugs work within the brain - examining the effects of drugs and what's similar about all drugs that are addictive.
The workshop is practical and understandable and builds on our much talked about 'Smarties exercise'.
It's ideal for practitioners, managers and commissioners, in fact anyone who would like to open the door to an aspect of drug use that's fascinating and illuminating in equal measure.
The course will introduce you to the brain’s Reward System, the ways in which drugs operate through this system, and an overview of the psychopharmacology of addiction - all conveyed with non-technical language and at your own pace.
THE COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
To recognise the brain’s rewards system and its role in reinforcing behaviour.
To understand the effects of substances on the brain.
To apply concepts of psychopharmacology to your role and the work you do.
